Ali is Iraqi, just finishing his first week driving a taxi, earning a living vicariously and negotiating his way around a city he doesn’t know. Esther is 88 and gets into his taxi at night but can’t remember where she’s going.  She’s afraid of the driver because of something she heard on the radio, she is hostile to him because she is lost. Both characters have something in common – Damage. His is from the violence of war, immeasurable loss, and statelessness. Hers is from the sudden displacement of being separated from all that is familiar to her and placed in an aged care centre. An understanding of each other’s isolation brings them together as they establish an urgent friendship, a rare trust. On the road at night, over a very short distance, they discover how to protect each other.
